Saving America's Beaches: The Causes of and Solutions to Beach Erosion

This unique book explains where beach sand comes from, how waves are formed and how they break and move sand down the coast, how engineering works have blocked this movement and caused beach erosion, and what can be done to save beaches for future generations of Americans. A three-part prescription for healthy beaches is outlined — backing off, bypassing sand, and beach nourishment.

Scott Douglass

Over 500 great American beaches were visited by the author while developing his “prescription for saving America’s beaches” that is outlined in this book. Scott Douglass is a Professor Emeritus in the Civil, Coastal & Environmental Engineering Department of the University of South Alabama. He worked his way through college by lifeguarding on the Jersey Shore, studied beach erosion at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Engineering Research Center, conducted laboratory investigations of how waves break on beaches for his Ph.D., has designed beach nourishment projects, and has consulted on coastal engineering projects throughout the country. He has written dozens of academic papers including many on the role of engineering in beach management. He was a co-author of the Fourth National Climate Assessment and developed much of the coastal engineering guidance for the Federal Highway Administration. Douglass finds that even though we have harmed some of our beaches with poor sand management, good coastal engineering has saved many of the most popular beaches in America.
