AWAKENINGS TO RACISM IN ALABAMA: The Education of a Native Son and the Lessons He and His Peers Learned Resisting Jim Crow

AWAKENINGS is a personal and professional memoir of growing up in the Jim Crow South and trying to overcome the author's racist heritage in the course of careers in higher education and in the law in Alabama and Florida. It describes his racial relationships as "a recovering racist" as well as his experiences as a university president, college professor at five universities, and lawyer. It includes also his writing career as a movie reviewer on radio, TV, and in print, and his classes on "Great American Films." Each of its 13 chapters concludes with one or more of 30 "lessons." However, it is more than merely the story of one life; it includes the racial experiences of a score of the author's professional friends and the social and historical contexts.
