Alan Samry & Gabriel Gold-Vukson-- Open House

  • Page & Palette 32 South Section Street Fairhope, AL, 36532 (map)

Fairhope, Alabama, was founded on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in 1894 as a social experiment. The pioneers applied the single-tax principle and economic philosophy found in Henry George’s 1879 book Progress and Poverty. The city of Fairhope was established in 1908 inside and around the colony, known today as the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation. This book celebrates the timeless

Fairhope bay views and historic buildings and homes. Alan L. Samry is an author, librarian, and public historian. Gabriel Gold-Vukson is the director of the Fairhope Museum of History. Comparing our present to our past is how we understand our history. Arcadia’s Past & Present series makes such local comparisons available. Books in this series offer a special view of American life by placing historical images side by side with contemporary photographs.
