Can you name one or some of your favorite books?
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay and Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, a Portuguese writer. I found that one at the airport years ago. One of my latest favorites is Circling the Sun by Paula McLain. And of course, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker. That one is special because of the story of how I came to find it—it was under some packaging in our back office with many other ARCs (advanced reader copies). It could have so easily been missed, but thankfully I snagged it and loved it. One thing led to another and we had Sendker visit the store before the book became a big deal. We’ve been friends ever since! That one is the most significant in my time at Page & Palette.
What are you currently reading?
Right now, Saban by Monte Burke, the new biography. I just finished the latest Kimberly Freeman book called Evergreen Falls. That one is a great story. I also just finished one called Speed Kings by Andy Bull that’s coming out in October. It tells about the USA winning the Olympic gold medal in bobsledding in 1932. That one is full of larger than life characters—it’s fabulous.
Tell us about one of your favorite author events at Page and Palette.
We had Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern at the Fairhope Library and that one was tons of fun. All of us from Page & Palette dressed up in evening gowns and the whole event was decorated like a circus. She was the first author for our book festival. It was a load of fun, especially because of the all the trouble we ran into with the costumes and decorating. Other than that, Winston Groom’s are consistently great.
Who’s a celebrity you’d wish would walk into Page & Palette one day?
Either Sean Connery or Matt Damon—nothing to do with writing, but that would be fun.
What’s a movie that you’ll watch over and over again?
Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice—but I have a lot I’ll watch over and over again.
